Irish eyes
will be smiling across Calderdale with more than a week of celebrations
planned for St Patrick's Day.
Among those taking part in the festivities are Irish music duo Peter
Lane and Jim Farrell, otherwise known as Both Barrels.
But the pair are having a night off on the day itself - March 17
and say they will be celebrating with plenty of Guinness.
They will be performing their traditional Irish music at Halifax
Catholic Club on Saturday, March 13 and at Airborne in Sowood on
Friday, March 19.
Their families are from Ireland and they were both brought up listening
to the same music. They have been performing together for 10 years,
with Peter on the guitar, Jim on the tin whistle and both of them
providing vocals.
Peter said: "We both played rugby together and would always
end up singing Irish songs. It was just a natural progression for
us to form a band.
"I think the Irish always make a fuss of St Patrick's Day because

chance for a celebration."
The Halifax Irish Society has also lined up a list of events to
mark the occasion.
On March 13 a social evening and dancing will be held at the Irish
Centre, with a performance by the Country Boys.
Festivities will continue through to the next day with a St Patrick's
Day parade at 10.30 am at the Irish Centre, led by the Manchester
Pipe Band. They will head for St Marie's Catholic Church. It will
reform after mass and head back to the Irish Centre for a day of
fun and merriment and live music from Gerry Carney.
On St Patrick's Day itself there will be a social evening and dancing
with the Nicky James Band and Halifax Irish Traditional Dancers.
The grand finale will take place on Saturday, March 20, with a St
Patrick's Hooley at the Irish Centre with dancing from the Mary
Lewis School of Dancing and music from Cosgrave and Shylo. |
