In 1804 he was a LABOURER living at Burton in Lonsdale, Yorkshire.
From 1808 to 1810 he was again a HUSBANDMAN still living at Burton, but moved to Forelands by 1811, before returning to Burton for 1815, and was still there in 1818.
In 1841 Census he was a FARMER aged 60 living at Broats(Broates?), near Ingleton, Yorkshire with three sons.
On 16 Dec 1848 his will was proved at Preston Land administry, in which he left less than £300 to his son James. (In 1999, £300 would be equivalent to £12,330.)

In 1851 Census he was a FARMER at Birchen Tree of 30 acres with his wife and all the children except Agnes.
In 1855 on the marriage of his son Edward he was a FARMER.
In 1861 Census he was a FARMER at Birchen Tree of 240 acres (this may be a mis-type of 24 acres) with his wife, sons Edmund and James.
In 1871 Census he was a FARMER of 38 acres at Higher Oak Head, Tatham (passed onto son John before death?) living with his wife and son Matthew.
In 1881 Census he was RETIRED and at his son John's house at Oak Head, Tatham with other son Leonard.
In 1882 he was living at Mewith, Low Bentham, Yorkshire.
