In 1880 the number of patients attended was 1,020; in 1881, 973; in 1882, 894; in each of the two latter years there has been two deaths (1 in 441 cases) about the usual clarity." - source 'Showells Dictionary of Birmingham", 1885.

In 1868 it converted into a charity service offering care at home. This accomodation was taken over by the Birmingham and Midland Free Hospital for sick children, established in 1862 by Dr. Thomas Pretious Heslop.
