"John Mason of Spicegill in Kirthwaite in Dent, yeoman
WILL dated 3rd May 1702

To Agnes my wife for life my real estate at Spicegill, sometime formerly belonging to one Nicholas Robinson and now in my possession, and also those arable & meadow adjoining & abutting to the east side of the aforementioned tenement known by the name of Fattlands which I purchased from Miles Mason deceased but not the three closes of land known by the distict names of Sykelands, Hellfaws and Low Ayland adjoining to the west side of Spicegill.

To my nephew Christopher Mason, second son of my brother Richard Mason the 3 closes of land lying to the west of Spicegill, viz Sykeland, Hellfaws and Low Ayland. Christopher is to have Spice gill after Agnes dies.

To my niece Barbara Thistlethwaite daughter of Timothy Thistlethwaite at the full age of 23 years £60 (threescore pounds)

To my nephew John Thistlethwaite son of Timothy Thistlethwaite of Chappell in Kirthwaite my real estate at Scales in Kirthwaite in Dent together with my two closes of land the one called Ayland and the other called Rooth, situated below & nigh the said Chappell in Kirthwaite in Dent.

To my nephew Edward Harper s/o the late deceased Rowland Harper my real estate at Baxstongill.

I give & bequeath the sum of twenty one pounds in money for ever to be Imployed & put out for use and interest for the use of the poore people Inhabitting within the Hamlitt of Kirthwaite in Dent aforesaid in the said County of Yorke and the use and interest of the said £21 to be Imployed for the buying of Blew Cloth which is to be bestowed given and distributed to the most necessitious poor people of the same Kirthwaite in every after two years after my decease by three of the most Ancyent Men of the Mason name in Kirthwaite and to continue forever to be distributed always on the Fryday next after Candlemas Day being the second day of February every two years once.

To Margaret Mason youngest daughter of my kinsman George Mason of the Westhouses in Dent £2.

To my servant William Eyonson £5

To Mr. Towers of Garsdale 20 shillings

R & R to my brother Richard Mason of Broadmire & my brother in law Timothy Thistlethwaite of Chappel in Kirthwaite, joint execs.
