JANE EYRE... the
well-dressed governess.
Our Society's 30th Anniversary called for something
rather special and to celebrate, we met in Haworth, about
geographically central to the northern area we cover.
Haworth's very name is synonymous with the Brontës and their literature,
historic Rectories, schoolhouses, wild moors and romantic period dramas. Indeed,
our own Pat Raine, produced one of our four pattern Packs from Charlotte Brontë's
going-away dress of 1854, on display in the museum.
Gillian Stapleton, of The History Wardrobe in York, will give us an intriguing
day. The morning featured Charlotte's greatest heroine, Jane Eyre, brought
to life with lively readings from contemporary authors, original items and high
quality replica garments.
Over lunch, Gillian agreed to leave her delightful props on display. In the
afternoon, Gillian detailed her background research, fabric sourcing and the
making of authentic replicas for the amazingly successful costume in context
presentations, ('Undressing Mr Darcy' is not to be missed, for instance.)
We know you thoroughly enjoyed every minute!
