Venue : The Priory Church, Sewerby Road, Bridlington, East Yorkshire
Barbara Mavis: The Priory Tapestries and
vestments
Mary Newlove: Fishermen's 'Ganzies'
Our February meeting offered us the opportunity
to visit the east coast during it's quiet winter season; without
the throngs of sun-and-sand seekers, we enjoyed this lovely
resort at our leisure. There was lots to see: Bridlington's historic
'old town' quarter has some of the earliest known streets, while
the 11th century Priory Church, our venue for the day, is something
of an architectural landmark. As well as some fabulous stained
glass, the building also boasts an array of ecclesiastical garments
and textile treasures, including the twelve panels which make
up the Priory's very own Tapestry.
With the current revival in knitting and knitted garments, our coastal visit
seemed an appropriate time to discover more about the patterns and traditions
involved in the making of seafaring 'ganzies' worn by the ast-coast fishermen.
